In September 1852 artist William Burke Kirwan and his wife Maria took a hired boat from Howth Harbour to Ireland's Eye. When the boat returned, Maria was dead, believed to have drowned. When a startling secret emerged about her husbands private life, Maria's body was exhumed and he was arrested for murder.
