Acts chapter 25 (verse 11): the footnote asserts that heretics are subject to secular execution and that civil rulers have a duty to put religious dissenters to death. Offered here is an exceptionally rare, textually flawless copy of the most politically explosive scriptural publication in irish history: james a. M’namara’s infamous 1818 cork edition of the rhemish new testament. Intended as a fierce catholic counter-attack against protestant bible societies, m’namara reprinted the brutal, uncompromising 1582 "rhemish notes" directly in the margins.
The result was an immediate, nationwide scandal that rocked the british empire.
The ultimate value of this volume lies in its un-censored margins. At the bottom of chapter 13 of the gospel of matthew, the commentary explicitly declares to the reader that protestants and other heretics "may and ought by public authority either spiritual or temporal to be chastised or executed. "
When british politicians discovered that an irish publisher was distributing these medieval mandates across munster under the apparent patronage of the catholic clergy, it triggered a massive crisis in the british parliament. Anti-catholic forces used this exact book to argue that irish catholics were fundamentally unsafe to emancipate. The public fallout was so severe that archbishop troy of dublin was forced to publicly condemn the notes, strip the book of its episcopal endorsement, and frantically distance the church from m’namara’s text. Many copies were subsequently destroyed or altered, making intact survivors extraordinarily scarce.
This is a museum-grade historical artifact. There are currently zero copies of this 1818 edition for sale anywhere on the global market, with known examples locked away in institutional strongrooms like trinity college dublin and the national library of ireland. For a collector of irish history, political warfare, or rare biblical polemics, this textually perfect copy represents the ultimate centerpiece acquisition.
