Bringing together a selection of lectures from one of the earliest professional historians of Ireland, the Reverend Dr. George Stokes (1843-1898), this volume focuses on the history of Ireland and Irish Christianity from its very beginnings up until the Anglo-Norman conquest of 1172. Tracing the growth and development of the Celtic Church in Ireland, from the arrival of Palladius and Patrick, this volume is a companion to Stokes’ Ireland and the Anglo-Norman church: a history of Ireland and Irish Christianity from the Anglo-Norman conquest to the dawn of the Reformation.
George Stokes held a doctorate of Divinity and was a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, a formal title associated with the learned Irish society. Also, a vicar of All Saints' Church of Blackrock; Professor of Ecclesiastical Hisotry in the University of Dublin; and Keeper of Primate Marsh's Library Or, Marsh's Library located in St. Patrick's Close, adjacent to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland remains a well preserved library of the late Renaissance and early Enlightenment. It opened in 1707 and was the first public library in Ireland. It was built by the order of Archbishop Narcissus Marsh and has a collection of over 25,000 volumes and 300 manuscripts. Stokes was also a "keeper" or head librarian for Marsh's Libary from 1887 to 1898. The first edition of this volume was first published in 1886. Google Books...
