Dublin Civic Week Official Handbook, 1929. Dublin, Dublin Civic Week Committee, 1929
The first Dublin Civic week was held in September 1927. A Civic Week Council had been set up under the aegis of the Dublin City Commissioners. The aim of the week was to draw attention to the various activities of Dublin people and to give Dubliners a sense of civic pride. Sub-committees, listed in the book, were set up to organise the various events, which included an historical pageant, an art exhibition and a military tattoo. The first Handbook was edited by Bulmer Hobson and contains information on the history, commerce, industry and cultural life of the city. It is beautifully produced with fine drawings of Dublin places by artists such as Sean O’Sullivan, Hilda Roberts and Flora Mitchell. The 1929 Handbook is even more elaborate, with, in addition to numerous illustrations, beautifully executed page decorations by a variety of artists, all reflecting different aspects of the city, from its carved river heads on its bridges to the stone monkeys outside the Kildare Street Club. The editor of this volume was E. M. Stephens.
