This book is the second of a 3-volume work, The Diocese of Killaloe, which provides an in-depth study of a local church set in the context of national and international politics, and in the broader context of religious developments in Rome and elsewhere.


This volume tells the story of the struggle for emancipation which reached its climax in the election of Daniel O'Connell as MP for Clare in 1828. The problems caused by famine and agrarian unrest are also dealt with, as well as the various political developments of the 1840s.


However, above all it is a study of a local Church in transition as the hardships caused by the penal laws faded from living memory. The enthusiasm and optimism of the immediate post-penal era were reflected in the construction of large solid church buildings and the establishment of communities of religious, female and male. There were problems, too, as the Church adjusted to new freedoms and the possibilities for greater centralisation and control through advances in communications.


The schism which took place in Birr in the 1820s and 1830s is studied in detail for the first time. The book also examines the evolving devotional practices of the period and analyses the data about mass going shortly before the Great Famine.
