Ordnance Survey – Britain before the Norman Conquest, 1973
This is the companion to the Ordnance Survey – Britain in the Dark Ages and takes us from 871 to 1006. It's a beautiful volume with thirty or so pages explaining the context and then almost the same dedicated to an index of places by type and their grid reference. This cost me a fiver and it's money well spent. It's not much more expensive to buy online today, which was a pleasant surprise.
It discusses the Scandinavian settlement, the Norse in Norway, Wales and Man, towns and fortifications and the church.
