Two distinct antique giltwood mirrors with elaborate French-style ornamentation
Two distinct antique giltwood mirrors with elaborate French-style ornamentation:
Large Horizontal Overmantel Mirror (Overmantel / Over-Sofa)
Style & Features: A wide, three-panel (overmantel) mirror with a gilded ornate frame. It features a decorative top crest (cresting) with scrollwork, floral motifs, and vertical dividers dividing the glass section into three panels.
Condition: Visible loss to the plaster/gesso work on the top cresting, where sections of the decorative scroll molding have broken off or deteriorated over time.
Vertical Pier/Wall Mirror with Bell-Flower Garland
Style & Features: A tall vertical wall mirror featuring a gilded, beaded border. At the top, it has a central oval medallion with a decorative drape/ribbon motif hanging down into three hanging bell-shaped finials or flower buds. The base features relief carving, including bird/eagle motifs.
Condition: Wear to the gilding, dust, and aging on the mirror glass (desilvering/foxing), which is consistent with age.
Both pieces are styled after 19th-century French Rococo or Neoclassical wall mirrors (giltwood / gesso frames).
