Ernst Thälmann (16 April 1886 – 18 August 1944) was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during much of the Weimar Republic. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's personal orders in 1944.
Friedrich Wilhelm Reinhold Pieck; 3 January 1876 – 7 September 1960) was a German politician and Communist. On 16 January 1919 Pieck, along with Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were arrested while meeting at Berlin Eden Hotel, Liebknecht and Luxemburg were then killed while "being taken to prison" by a unit of Freikorps. While the two were being murdered, Pieck managed to escape. Pieck escaped the Nazis and fled with his family to Russia before the start of world war 2. At the conclusion of the war in 1945 Pieck returned to Germany with the victorious Red Army. A year later, he helped engineer the merger of the eastern branches of the KPD and SPD into the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. In 1949, he became the first President of the German Democratic Republic, an office abolished upon his death.
