Apostleship of Prayer 1970s
'Apostleship of Prayer' leaflets from 1971/72. The pocket-size leaflets were published by the Irish Messenger Office, managed by the Jesuit Order and based at 37 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin during the 1970s. They were a staple of Irish Catholic devotional life, focusing heavily on spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During the 1970s, these leaflets, often accompanied by the monthly Messenger of the Sacred Heart magazine, aimed to encourage daily prayer, reparation, and the offering of daily actions to the Sacred Heart, often featuring specific intentions for the Pope. Leaflets contained prayers of petition and thanksgiving, often providing a monthly intention, along with articles on Ignatian spirituality, Jesuit saints, and practical Christian living. Despite the cultural shifts in Ireland during the 1970s, these publications remained influential, part of a long tradition of "Messenger" leaflets and pamphlets in Irish homes and schools. While earlier leaflets (1950s/60s) might have featured very traditional imagery, 1970s pamphlets began to reflect the liturgical and pastoral changes occurring in the Catholic Church.
Very informative on background of feast days featured. Ten leaflets available plus two extras now added (i.e. a different February 1972 date and a leaflet for November 1972). Inked-out names on just two of the twelve. In good vintage order. €6. Postage add €2.
