1950 Rome Vatican medal
Vatican Jubilee Medal from the Holy Year of 1950. The first holy year after WW11.
These medals were issued as souvenirs or "pilgrim tokens" for those who traveled to Rome during the Jubilee (Holy Year) declared by Pope Pius XII.
Item Breakdown
Central Symbol: The "Chi-Rho" (\chi\rho). This is one of the earliest forms of christogram, formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters—chi and rho (XP)—of the Greek word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christos).
Latin Inscription: The border reads "ANNO JUBILAEI MCML".
Anno Jubilaei: Year of Jubilee
MCML: The Roman numeral for 1950.
