Restored 1898 Alfonso Abatte Mandolin Bowlback
A gorgeous bowlback mandolin made in Italy by Alfonso Abatte in 1898.
I bought it 6 years ago from an Italian couple who thought they had struck it rich in an auction - however it was in a sad condition with the soundboard detaching and the fretboard a little warped and cracked. I got it as a photo prop only, knowing it was unplayable.
To cut a long story short, after showing the mandolin to the inimitable Tom Cussen of Clareen Banjos in Clarenbridge County Galway, he passed it on to the renowned 5th generation German luthier Thomas Dotzauer. Between the three of us Toms we agreed it was worth restoring. Then I forgot about it. Then Tom Cussen forgot about it. Then Thomas Dotzauer forgot about it. But 6 years and a hefty number of Euros later I recently collected it from Tom Cussen!
Thomas Dotzauer has replaced the fretboard and fixed the soundboard issues and it’s the sweetest thing I have ever played! In replacing the fretboard he made the neck a little thicker/wider for better playability. You can see this in one of the photos. Also I didn’t bring the finish back to “as new” because I like the signs of use - even though for a 128 year old instrument it’s pretty good looking!
My only issue is the curse we all suffer from - too many mandolins!
Thomas Dotzauer valued it at €1600. He says it would be perfect for a player in a mandolin orchestra.
