As the building burned, Blue Beetle was trapped under rubble and struggled before breaking free. Then, Blue Beetle jumped out of the burning building and the fire department was surprised to see that he survived and asked him to help them defeat Firefist. At his home on the South Side, Firefist believed that the Blue Beetle was actually dead before pulling out a newspaper article and recalling how he became Firefist. He had an accident during an experiment, causing a fire, and was left to burn by the fire department, leaving his face scarred and later wanted revenge against the fire department.
At Kord Industries, Jeremiah suggested that the piece of charred wood he had analyzed was burnt by Greek fire. Moments later, Blue Beetle returned to his fortress under Kord Industries and changed into Ted Kord. On Pago Island, Carapax was still searching for whatever Dan Garrett lost his life searching for.
Ted returned to his Lakeshore Drive penthouse before Melody surprised him. As the two talked in bed, Max Fisher planned to face Ted in the morning. The next moring, at S.T.A.R. Labs, Murray was having promethium loaded into a truck to be transported to Kord Industries. As Murray left with the truck, the janitor believed that he was now forced to move up his timetable.
After Ted greeted her, Angela looked at a stolen microscope that she hid in her purse. Melody and Jeremiah showed Ted their findings on the piece of wood and he asked them to find out if any of the supply stores sold the chemicals to the same man. Minutes later, Blue Beetle left in his Bug, as the tires on Murray's truck became flat. The janitor watched as his spell failed and thought that his power would too without the promethium.
While Blue Beetle found the chemicals Firefist used to create Greek fire, he could not find him, but found a newspaper clipping. Then, he phoned Melody at Kord Industries and asked her to read an article on the previous day's Sun-Times regarding Firefist. As the Chicago Museum of Firefighting was opened, Firefist attacked before Blue Beetle intervened. As Firefist set fire to the museum, Blue Beetle followed him to the rooftop and removed his mask before the latter fell back down into the museum where the fire tanks on his costume exploded, killing him.
Afterwards, the museum was destroyed and the chief believed that Firefist took their entire heritage with him, although Blue Beetle claimed that he would never be forgotten as long as people like him put their lives on the line everyday.
