Roland GAIA 2 — key features

🎛️ Sound engine

* Hybrid wavetable + virtual analogue synthesis
* 3 oscillators per voice
* OSC 1: wavetable
* OSC 2 & 3: virtual analogue
* 22-note maximum polyphony
* 63 wavetable waveforms
* Wavetable position can be modulated
* Phase Modulation (P-MOD)
* Shape Modulation (S-MOD)
* VA waveforms: sine, triangle, saw, square, SuperSaw
* 5 noise waveforms
* Ring modulation
* Oscillator sync
* Cross modulation
* Unison
* Portamento
* Chord Memory

🔥 Filter

A proper hands-on multimode filter:

* LPF
* BPF
* HPF
* 12 / 18 / 24 dB/oct slopes
* ADSR filter envelope
* Filter Drive

That last one is particularly interesting for aggressive techno sounds—you can push the filter into saturation rather than relying entirely on external distortion.

🌊 Modulation

* 2 LFOs
* 5 standard LFO waveforms
* 1 programmable step LFO
* LFOs can be assigned to up to 4 parameters
* Extensive modulation routing
* Motional Pad for X/Y modulation
* Motion recording/playback

🎚️ Effects

* 53 MFX types
* 7 Reverb/Delay types
* 3 Chorus types / 9 modes
* Master EQ
* Master compressor
* Effect routing can be rearranged
* Includes Roland-style JUNO Chorus
* Shimmer and modulation reverbs

🥁 Sequencer / performance

The GAIA 2 is more than just a keyboard synth.

* 64-step sequencer
* Each step can contain 8 notes + 4 controls
* Real-time recording
* Step recording
* TR-REC style recording
* Probability
* Random pattern generation
* Arpeggiator
* Up
* Down
* Up/Down
* Random
* Note Order
* 16 scales

For your kind of music…

Given the industrial/techno/electro direction you’ve been working in with Formulator, I’d say the GAIA 2 is actually a pretty compelling synth.

The interesting bit isn’t simply that it’s “Roland VA”—it’s the combination of two analogue-style oscillators + a wavetable oscillator + phase/shape modulation + filter drive. That gives you a much broader palette than something like a straightforward analogue-style subtractive synth.

You can go from classic Roland-ish basses and sequences → nasty distorted techno stabs → metallic percussion → evolving wavetable textures without needing to dive deeply into menus. And the sequencer + probability + motion controls are particularly useful for techno.

If you’re considering buying one, I can also  compare the GAIA 2 directly against the Novation Peak, Korg Minilogue XD, Hydrasynth and ASM Hydrasynth Explorer specifically for techno.
