Clavia Nord Rack 2X

The Clavia Nord Rack 2X is the rack/desktop version of the Nord Lead 2X, a Swedish virtual-analogue subtractive synthesizer introduced in 2003. It combines a deliberately immediate, knob-per-function interface with 20-voice polyphony, four-part multitimbrality and a distinctly crisp Nord sound, making it a long-lived favourite for hands-on electronic synthesis.

Sound engine and architecture

The Rack 2X has two oscillators per voice, with analogue-style waveforms, oscillator sync, FM, ring modulation and noise, feeding multimode resonant filtering including 12/24dB low-pass, band-pass and high-pass modes. Two LFOs, filter and amplifier ADSR envelopes, an additional modulation envelope, arpeggiator and Clavia’s particularly useful Morph system provide considerably more movement than the simple front panel initially suggests. It is 20-voice polyphonic and four-part multitimbral, allowing four patches to be layered or addressed independently.

What makes the 2X different

Compared with the earlier Nord Rack 2, the 2X increased polyphony from 16 to 20 voices, replaced the limited storage arrangement with substantial internal Flash memory, and introduced 24-bit/96kHz D/A conversion. It holds 990 programs (396 user and 594 factory), 400 performances (100 user and 300 factory) and 40 user percussion kits, while retaining patch compatibility with the Nord Lead/Rack 2. Four separate analogue outputs are especially handy when using its four multitimbral slots in a studio.

Workflow and character

Its enduring appeal is largely about immediacy: 26 knobs and 27 buttons put most synthesis functions directly under the fingers, rather than behind menus. The architecture excels at punchy basses, cutting leads, plucks, pads and synthetic percussion, while velocity programming and Morph assignments allow multiple parameters to change expressively from a controller. MIDI implementation is unusually useful for its era because the editing controls transmit and receive MIDI CC data.
