After several years of use and, frankly, blissful happiness, I succumbed to the siren song of VU meters and "upgraded" (maybe, "side graded" would be a better term) to a FiiO DAC with meters and a tube output stage.
Does the FiiO sound better? - not really.
The Topping is cleaner, quieter, and more detailed but, as I listen to a lot of jazz, I like the softer, warmer rendition offered by the FiiO and thus, the Topping E30 DAC is for sale.
The aluminum-cased Topping E30 DAC has inputs for up to three different digital sources:
1) Toslink (optical) input
2) coaxial input
3) USB input (type B)
The Topping E30 has two modes. One is pure DAC and the other is PRE. In the PRE mode, the E30 can decode data, just as it would in the DAC mode but adds a 99-step volume control.
In the DAC mode, the easy-to-read display informs the listener of the incoming sample rate and shows the selected digital input.
In the PRE mode, the screen will show the selected digital input, the selected volume in dB, and the data stream that is playing (that is, whether the data stream is in PCM or DSD)
According to Audio Science Review:
Measured distortion was extremely low (-120dB) and a SINAD of 112dB — excellent for a DAC this size.
