Giving away a Sony STR-DH790 (broken). I am hoping someone with more knowhow than me can get it working. I got it for very cheap and don't see the point in paying to have it fixed, so if someone can do it themselves or use it for parts, that seems better than just throwing it away.

This turns on, screen comes on, the remote works fine, you can change channels, even the video functions work on it. But no sound comes out, one day I had sound and after very little use it just stopped putting out sound. Since then I have tried it a few times and sometimes I have get sound all day and thought it worked again and then it will play no sound after a day or two again..

After your comment that I don't reply, I just checked my private message and there is a message from you and I didn't have any notification, it's probably partly my fault, I knew that this app wasn't working well.

in case you haven't already, no harm in trying a factory reset:

(got this from a quick online search) ..seems to be a common issue audio dropouts on this model and there is much info on things to try online from cables shorting as mentioned by Gerbs there and also ARC settings (HDMI lockup) and other things.

Turn on the receiver using the power button.
Press and hold the POWER button on the front panel for about 5 to 10 seconds.
The message "CLEARING" will appear, followed by "CLEARED".
The receiver will turn off and then back on to its factory default state.

@Gerbs No wires touching as it does stay on as long as you like it and I'm using banana plugs so I don't think they can touch. The other button I am nearly sure I have pressed before but will give it a go.

I have one of these. Check these two things that have caught me out before.
Small button on left of receiver labelled “speakers” and also check none of your -/+ speaker cables are touching each other. If they do it shuts down to protect.
