PRICE DROP! Two high-end Alchemist Genesis mono bloc power amps. Each 100w (RMS) bi-polar unit has just been tested and serviced. Both are significantly upgraded above spec with the addition of protection circuits & long-life LED power switch bulbs.

Hifi World favourably compared the Genesis to large Krell, Music Fidelity and Threshold amplifiers. Reviewer Alan Sircom stated: “Six seconds into the first track was enough to convince me that this was one of the most important new amplifiers in Britain today.“

They are a discrete size and two will sit side-by-side on a standard Target or Sound Organisation rack shelf. But make no mistake, they are mega, mega powerful.

Genesis mono blocks were not built with a protection circuit. A new protection dc board has been installed in both units with a separate transformer power supply to each.

The unit’s power switches were damaged with age so I had them rebuilt with led bulb modification because original bulbs were no longer available.

The power supply to both units was tested and found to be working perfectly so no changes were necessary. Capacitors and transistor values were tested and, if found to be suboptimal, replaced with new Panasonic Japan Audio Series components. All replacement parts were mirrored across both units to ensure matched outputs and performance was maintained. Dry joints were identified and repaired and both units were tested for one week under load with music signal.

Alchemist Hi-Fi was formed in 1989 and their first product was this Genesis power amplifier. I don’t know the production run but these units have consecutive serial numbers 201 and 202.

In their short history Alchemist Hi-Fi went on to produce both analogue products (pre, power and integrated amplifiers, a tuner and a phono stage) and digital components (CD players, transports and DACS). Most analogue products were designed by founder Glen Gayle. The company closed in 2001.

The Genesis mono bloc’s technical claim to fame is that there is one 10mF capicator in the signal path which reduces the overall capacitance of the circuit to improve midrange transparency.

Externally, each amp has an extra pair of speaker terminals for bi-wiring which, because of the choice of internal wiring, are marked LF and HF for low and high frequencies. Apart from the obvious advantages of bi-wiring, they allow a degree of tailoring to the speaker when single cables are used - smaller speakers sound better with the little bit of low frequency roll-off that the high frequency output m Hi-Fi Word approved strongly of their smaller
case size stating: “Despite a solid construction, the amplifiers are not particularly heavy or large. It is refreshing, in the realm of the big Krells, heavyweight Musical Fidelitys and the gigantic Thresholds, that the Alchemist amplifiers are diminutive by comparison. “

The one other modification I undertook was to polish off the horrendous branding that was on the front of the case and render them plain brass faced units. This dated heavy metal-style typography simply did my head in, and I like heavy metal! You can see it in the last photo. They’re still branded on the back but it will be easy to replace should you wish.
