Pioneer PD-S801, Legato Link . vintage CD player with CU PD082 remote control. Circa 1992. Equipped with a PEA1030 Stable Platter mechanism, dual PD2028B digital-to-analogue converters PD0116A digital filter.

The Pioneer PD-S801 is one of the most significant models from the early 1990s, when the Japanese brand introduced the revolutionary Stable Platter Mechanism. Unlike traditional players, the disc was inserted upside down and read from above, resting on a fully supported surface much like a turntable. This technical choice, inherited from higher-end models, underlined the pioneering nature of the design, with the aim of reducing vibrations and offering greater stability.

The digital heart of the PD-S801 was entrusted to the 1-bit Pulseflow converters developed by Pioneer, combined with the Legato Link filter, a solution that guaranteed a warm and natural sound signature, far removed from the bright and often artificial tones of other players of the time. The performance was particularly appreciated with vocal and acoustic music, capable of delivering a well-organised and balanced soundstage, with a particular richness in the bass registers.
