When a seasoned and experienced reviewer leaves the listening room with a broad grin, something impressive and enjoyable has happened beforehand. This was certainly the case during our January test of the Pioneer SC-LX77 in our reference test cinema. Even beforehand, while researching the receiver's features and capabilities, our mouths were watering: digital amplifier technology, which had already impressed us in previous Pioneer receiver tests, THX Ultra2 Plus and Air Studios certifications, and a very comprehensive and modern technology package inside – all this promised a lot of fun during the test!
equipment
The LX-77's technical capabilities are evident right from the connection options. In keeping with the era of modern media players and display devices, it features eight HDMI inputs and three corresponding outputs.
One of these outputs supplies a zone independent of the main room with digital video and audio signals. A separate subwoofer output is even available for listening zone 2. In the main room, the receiver can, of course, play 3D and UHD TV images. With its trigger, infrared, and control interfaces, it can also be easily integrated into a home automation system. This includes the network connection, which allows the LX77 to stream music and images and to be controlled via PC or app. A Wi-Fi receiver is also included, enabling wireless operation. Inside, the modernity continues: high-quality SABRE 32-bit Ultra D/A converters from ESS, enabling music playback at resolutions up to 192 kHz/32-bit; decoders for all current audio formats and high-resolution music in FLAC, AIFF, or even (via USB) DSD; and a video section with the Marvel 88DE2750-IF2 HD/SD video converter for 4K/2K-24p image processing. Picture settings can be customized via a separate menu, which displays the various settings on the receiver's screen. The LX77 likely easily met the stringent requirements for THX Ultra2 Plus certification, as filling a room of nearly 85 cubic meters with sound at a minimum listening distance of 3.66 meters should have been child's play for its power amplifiers. In both the test bench and the listening room, these speakers present themselves as extremely powerful and dynamic. As with some of its predecessors, the LX77's musical fine-tuning was carried out in collaboration with London's Air Studios. Therefore, the receiver proudly bears the "Air Studios Monitor" seal of approval.
Setup & Multimedia
The menu navigation of the LX77 hasn't changed much compared to its predecessor. The proven, proprietary MCACC calibration system precisely and optimally adjusts the receiver to its audio sources and the room's acoustics. While the calibration process is relatively lengthy, it takes standing waves and room reflections into account and performs full-range phase correction. In manual setup mode, users can further refine the sound with functions like "Fine Channel Level" and "Fine Speaker Distance," attempting to extract the last bit of improvement. The setup menu also reveals other features of the LX77, such as the MHL capability of the front-panel HDMI input. The receiver is also "HTC Connect" compatible, allowing music playback from compatible smartphones without a dedicated app. It readily accepts iDevices and, if desired, plays music streamed via cable or AirPlay without gaps. The LX77 can stream music from the internet via Spotify or internet radio stations. As mentioned earlier, lossless music file formats can also be played back from the home network or via USB connection. Optionally, music can also be streamed to the receiver via Bluetooth using the AS-BT200 adapter (price: approx. €30).
sound
The prelude to the thoroughly enjoyable listening session consisted of playing various musical genres. These included, for example, Astrid North's complex sounds and deep bass attacks, and the groovy funk of Fishbone's "Bonin' in the Boneyard" with the killer bass of John Norwood Fisher. The LX77 delivered a powerful yet incredibly detailed performance. It pushed the connected floorstanding speakers to their physical limits, seemingly commanding them to give their absolute all. And that's precisely what the Pioneer receiver does. Without concealing even the slightest detail in the music, it delivers a truly masterful and engaging performance. Its dynamic attack is also noticeable and captivating during movie playback. Attack scenes like those in "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," reproduced through nine speakers (with PLIIz activated) and two subwoofers, leave a lasting impression and bring the aforementioned grin to your face. Arrows fly across the room, the floor practically cracks open just like in the film, and projectiles cause everything to shatter tangibly. Even the two quite substantial subwoofers seemed to be begging for reinforcements to keep up with the sheer power of the LX77. At the same time, the receiver's overall sound performance remains absolutely pristine, making subtle sounds from both main and secondary locations in the film scenes clearly audible.
Conclusion
The SC-LX77 can put a big smile on your face! This receiver delivers outstanding sound and technical performance, transforming any home theater evening into a truly memorable experience. Of course, decent speakers and tolerant neighbors are essential. Why not invite them over and enjoy the show together?
