The Naim NAC 32.5 is a classic high-end preamplifier from the "Chrome Bumper" (CB) era, produced approximately between 1984 and 1989. While often referred to as "Chrome Bumper," this refers to the polished silver-colored edges of the outer sleeve, paired with a silver Naim logo on the front fascia.

Key Specifications & Features

Dual Rail Support: The ".5" designation indicates it supports a dual +24V DC power rail, allowing for a significant performance jump when used with a Naim HiCap power supply via a SNAIC-5 cable.

Modular Design: Internally, it features a motherboard with 11 daughter boards (cards) connected via gold-plated precision connectors.

Inputs: Includes BNC sockets for phono cartridges and locking DIN sockets for other connections. It typically features options for Moving Coil (Type S or K) or Moving Magnet (Type N) phono boards.

Controls: Known for its classic toggle switch for muting and a mono/stereo switch.

Dimensions: 205 (W) x 300 (D) x 76 (H) mm.

The Naim NAC 32.5 is a highly regarded vintage preamplifier from Naim Audio’s "Chrome Bumper" (CB) era. While users sometimes colloquially refer to the "silver" or "chrome" bumper, the official term is Chrome Bumper, named for the distinctive polished edges of its black-painted aluminum casing.

Sound Quality & Performance

The NAC 32.5 is often celebrated for its "funky" and "warm" sound, representing a bridge between the older and more modern Naim signatures.

PRAT and Musicality: Users praise it for classic "PRAT" (Pace, Rhythm, and Timing), 3D imaging, and openness.

Warmth and Body: Compared to its successor, the NAC 72, it is noted for having more mid-range body and a smoother, warmer presentation.

Synergy: It is famously synergistic when paired with other Chrome Bumper components, particularly the NAP 250 power amp and HiCap power supply.

Vinyl Performance: It is highly favored for vinyl playback, with some collectors preferring it over the later NAC 72 specifically for its phono stage performance.

Design and Internal Versatility

One of the 32.5's greatest strengths is its modular design, allowing for easy experimentation.

Daughter Boards: Unlike lower-tier models like the NAC 42 or 62, which are hard-wired, the 32.5 uses removable daughter boards. This allows users to:

Swap original Naim boards for third-party options like Ryan Sound Lab (RSL) for improved clarity.

Upgrade to the 729 "time-aligned" boards from the NAC 72 for increased precision.

Inputs: It features multiple switched inputs, including phono (with various board options like 'K' for MC or 'N' for MM), tuner, and two tape inputs.
