Robert Sorby Roughing Gouge
I bought a 3/4" Sorby roughing gouge in 1989 and have used it on every spindle turning job since. Its is by far the most useful tool in my set of turning chisels. Most roughing gouges have a simple crescent shape profile. The Sorby has a deep curve at the bottom and two straight wings at the sides. The curved bottom removes material very quickly but as you approach the final shape you can lean the tool to produce an smoother, almost final surface. A single pass with a skew chisel is usually all that is needed to finish.
You can buy this tool new from Mckennas in Limerick for €99.49
