Goosewing Side Axe

A right handed side axe in excellent condition. This is a highly specialized, asymmetric woodworking tool traditionally used for hewing, which is the process of squaring up round logs into flat timber beams.The blade is very sharp and ready for use. I have fitted a new hickory handle.
Unlike modern saws or chainsaws that tear through wood fibers, a goosewing axe slices cleanly at an angle along the grain. This compresses and seals the wood fibers naturally, making hand-hewn logs highly resistant to moisture and rot. By the mid-1800s, mass-produced, cheaper broad axes replaced the goosewing, rendering it a rare vintage collectible and a highly prized tool for traditional timber framers.
