Long before the cordless drill and the pozidrive screw a skilled cabinetmaker would have prepared the hole for a screw by making a pilot hole with a gimlet and then countersinking the hole. This eliminated the risk of the screw splitting the wood and ruining the piece.
These are both in good condition.
