Swap 5090 Rtx Nvidia Gpu Graphics Card

Swap 5090 Rtx Nvidia Gpu Graphics Card Swap 5090 Rtx Nvidia Gpu Graphics Card Graphics Cards

To anyone buying, selling, or parting out 5090s for the vram and core chips.

I'm looking to swap my Palit Gamerock 5090, plus cash your way, for a new Suprim, Astral, or similar large heatsink model.

The Gamerock is perfect, only turned on twice to check bios because the prebuild uses a 14900KF.

I'm just testing the waters for finding a larger air heatsink model. I read that the Suprim is the best for vram temps, which would be better for a 24/7 project.

I assume for anyone selling on, or parting out, that the specific model doesn't matter.

@stuff.hunter no worries,

Extra connectors do add resistance and points of failure, but I think balance and balance monitoring are important for a 600w 12v-2x6 connector.

If any pins have poor contact, the increased resistance means the load is moved to the good pins.

Automatic current balancing would force that load back to pins with poor contact, which isn't ideal.

So, catching the imbalance should avoid most issues. Note that some cables that bridge the pins would disguise issues on the psu side.

If something goes wrong, I'd rather a repair or replacement instead of a refund of a 5090.

@sffking No set plan, I think I'll stick with the Palit.

I see. If that`s your plan for the Gigabyte then go ahead and get it but they are notorious for cheaping out on components. They sorted the thermal paste leaks last year however they add soo much of their hybrid thermal paste/putty on their VRAMs and capacitors that it made their cards very annoying to waterblock as it has taken people hours to remove the paste from the PCB to apply the block thermal pads. Nothing guarantees the cleaning will leave the small PCB components unharmed. If full metal block is what you want, can`t go wrong with Optimus however you`ll have to get a PNY card. Bykski might be an option as the current horror stories could be from user errors however best to know the risks before going down that road.

@sffking Thank you, really appreciate the advice.

The Gigabyte cards did have the thermal paste issue last year. Was considering a Stealth Ice made after this. Saw a beautiful Comino waterblock with cutouts for both power connector positions so would allow the original connector position to be soldered but they only operate B2B and at quantity.

I agree, Watercool is great. I'll watch for discounts.

I didn’t know there were issues with Bykski tolerances. I'll pass on the enterprise version then.

I am leaning towards keeping the card now. Inevitable scope creep
thwarted. Thanks!

@cps_goodbuy I`d avoid Gigabyte cards as they cheap out on a lot of things. They have also applied soo much thermal paste on their 5090s that waterblocking it would be a nightmare. Funny enough, Zotac 5090s are the only ones to have a fuse on the power delivery meaning your core is super protected from any power shorts, Palit were the most quiet (coilwhine wise). Suprim is also good but including Astral, its only chosen for the most part due to aesthetic. Be careful of getting waterblocks from Bykski as numerous 5090s PCBs have been warped overtime due to uneven pressures in the block design. Focus on the big guns, Optimus, Watercool and EKWB for their full metal GPU blocks if thats the aesthetic you want however your GPU options will become limited. In my opinion, no one makes waterblocks better than Watercool, and their aesthetic is top and minimal. Alphacool has too much acrylic for my liking. Bykski has the full metal server blocks however just be aware that you may end up warping your pcb and damaging the GPU as its become a common occurrence. Overall, I`d keep the Palit and get the Watercool Heatkiller block and call it quits. You will find out how annoying coilwhine is if you get an Astral/Suprim and waterblock it. Remember, when you add a block, fan noise is gone and coilwhine becomes more apparent.

Should be hx1200i of course 😁

Can’t remember exactly but it adds an extra resistance (2 extra connectors ) to the whole gpu power supply which isn’t good, especially when the 5090 draws significant amps under heavy load. Personally using good PSU (Corsair hx1200j) with their angled gpu cable and don’t expecting any issues.
BTW, apologies for jumping in on your ad

Shouldn't individual pin monitoring, when setup properly, catch issues beforehand. If it doesn't, and then connector does burn, TG will cover repair.

@stuff.hunter In what way? User error? Device issue or pin?

@OP: I’d be careful with WireView, seen on Reddit that it burns

@sffking Thank you for the advice.

I haven't tested the card yet (waiting on a Thermal Grizzly WireView Pro 2), but I will check how it performs in the case.

I heard about Asus coil whine but wasn't sure how big an issue it was.

After "warranty", I was thinking of waterblocking but there are no server grade (no plexiglass) waterblocks for the Palit that I can fine, so that was also a consideration.

Do you have any experience with Gigabyte? I think the Master Ice and Shadow Ice share the same pcb layout but with a relocated power connector and have some server grade blocks available.

There is no significant temperature differences between the 5090 AIB models. This temperature issue is only applicable to the 5090 FE model as its memory temperatures are soo bad compared to AIBs. All AIBs effectively have the same cooling range and you only pick up what makes less coil whine and also which look you like. You can get a MSI Suprim that has a 5 degrees better temp on memory but you could also end up with a loud coil whine. If your PALIT 5090 is quiet with no coil whine and its keeping memory temperatures below 80 for extended periods then I`d suggest you stick to it. I have tried many 5090s AIB models and found Palit to even overclock better than ASUS and to be low coil whine than the ASUS and MSI 'premium' cards. MSI and ASUS tend to use overkill capacitors on their 5090s which are notorious for awful coilwhine.
