We had it for years as a fire guard, but it seems that an additional black piece has gone missing based on pictures and instructions I've seen only for use when as a fire guard.

See the last picture, the missing standalone piece looks just like the highlighted black plastic loop that's present on all the gates (the loose piece isn't needed if you make a complete square or pentagon, but can be used if attaching to a wall). We were using it for years and didn't notice this bit was missing, it was still firmly attached to the wall)
