This is a framed copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. The original document was issued by the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army during the Easter Rising in Ireland, which began on April 24, 1916.
◦ The proclamation declared Ireland to be a sovereign, independent state.
It was read publicly by Patrick Pearse in front of the General Post Office in Dublin on Easter Monday, 1916.
The document guaranteed "religious and civiliberty, equal rights and equal opportunities" to all citizens.
All seven signatories of the proclamation were executed by the British military in the aftermath of the Rising.
