Elevated phosphate levels can encourage unwanted algae growth and may inhibit the growth of corals and calcareous algae.

The standard colour scale covers a range of 0.03 to 3.00 mg/L PO4.

For very low phosphate concentrations, the test can be used in a higher-sensitivity mode, allowing detection from 0.015 mg/L PO4.
