It has a huge active (filtration) surface, which is created by a complicated network of channels and pores. They are an excellent habitat for beneficial nitrifying bacteria of the genera Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter. These bacteria use metabolism toxic to fish in their life processes.
Ceramics may not be replaced for a long time. When cleaning the filter, rinse the element in water drained from the aquarium.
