Axolotl Care
1. Axolotls should not be held – they have protective slime on their body which can be damaged by touch, germs and human skin oils.
2. Axolotls are carnivorous. They need high protein food. (Worms, fish, crustations) and specialised Axolotl food. Ordinary garden worms are not good as they can carry diseases. Pet shops sell boxes of worms and you can make your own wormery to have a good supply of worms to feed your pet.
3. Axolotls can live 10 – 20 years in captivity, with good food, good water quality, and the right temperature.
4. Axolotls live in cool water (between 60–68°F / 15–20°C)
5. Axolotls need an air pump in their fresh water tank, they need clean water – avoid untreated chlorine tap water
6. Axolotls live their whole lives underwater in a juvenile state.
7. Axolotls can regrow body parts.
8. Axolotls are opportunists. If something moves they try to eat it. They will bite each other if there is overcrowding, or not enough food. They are very happy living alone. If there are fish in their tank, they will eat them.
9. Recommended to watch some YouTube videos to learn more before committing to owning these amazing creatures.
