Galbraith has been everywhere & known everyone & not a nuance has escaped him. Since he's always exhibited a certain elan it is hardly surprising to meet him as a topical entertainer--you might call The Triumph, BBC-soned, This Was the Revolution That Was. It still is, of course, until perhaps the bitter-sweet ending, for the tale of the crisis in Puertos Santos & its reception by the American government, which Galbraith subtitles "A Small Fable of Modern Diplomacy," is what's going on in Central America (& elsewhere) & in the State Department & in Congress & in the White House today. Briefly, the corrupt Martinez government, which the USA has supported by all available means, is quietly ousted by a fiction suspected by the key State Department official of being Communist-tinged; until it "clears" itself it won't receive recognition or aid, but unless it receives aid it will in turn be overthrown by the military. The ending is the sort an audience shouldn't enter on, a stunning twist of the screw. Throughout, there's prominent name-naming & hilarious typecasting (the ineffectual ambassador, cynical charge d'affaires, uninformed reporter, self-important educator, undiplomatic idealist). There's also the ever-present tense of the author, commenting on the foibles of men & nations, relishing their small pretensions, decrying the conditions of plumbing in Puertos Santos, the subtleties of seating in a Washington restaurant. Just when the accumulating detail tends to become tedious, Galbraith swings into that finale. It's an adroit performance, obviously loaded & with some lingering epigrams.--Kirkus
