Mongo investigates the supposed suicide of his nephew, a computer genius who created a game inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The investigation leads Mongo across the United States and into the Arctic to stop a mad scientist who is mutating creatures through DNA experiments.

The story combines hard-boiled detective fiction with fantasy, mythic elements, and Wagner's Ring Cycle.
