The Research

A US trial of 6,000 hens fed 1.25% seaweed meal saw thin-shelled eggs drop from 3% to 1.9%. When the seaweed was removed after three months, thin shells returned to 3% (SSRA Report).

In a trial of 544 White Leghorn pullets on a nutrient-deficient diet, egg-laying had dropped to 20–30%. Adding 8% Ascophyllum seaweed meal improved production, though results varied with the timing and quality of the seaweed harvest (Høie and Sandvik).

Across 2,356 chicks, adding Ascophyllum seaweed meal to an otherwise balanced diet (without yeast, grass meal or cod liver oil) produced extra weight gain and improved health (Høie and Sandvik).

In a further trial of 3,052 chicks on diets deficient in vitamins A and B, seaweed supplementation led to marked improvements in growth and feed efficiency (Høie and Sandvik).
