Steinberger GR4 USA 1990
USA Steinberger GR4, 1990 Newburgh era
The bad news: Look at the pictures
The good news: Ok, a previous owner did some unspeakable things to this guitar, such as chiselling out between the neck and middle pickups, possibly with their forehead. There's extensive finish checking. It has been well played, that's for sure.
Despite how it looks, however, it plays just fine and sounds superb. Neck is in great shape, plenty of life left in the frets. Functionally, it's all there and I've used it regularly for the last 10 years or so that I've owned it.
Maple body, carbon neck, vol, tone, 5 way pickup switching. Pickups are USA DiMarzios, not the original pickups which would have been H-S-S, the lad I bought it off said they were from a JS1200, a Fred and a PAF Joe. I bought a brass locking nut to allow regular strings to be used. It is held on by string tension. Double ball end strings can be used if you really wanted, but the flexibility exists to use any stringsyou like.
I was initially planning to have the gap filled and a fancy maple cap put on when I bought it but, to be honest, the looks don't bother me and I kept playing it instead. If someone fancies, there's a simple enough project to make it look nice again.
Please examine the pics carefully. The prices for these have gone stupid and they're never going to go down. These will never be made again. This one needs a little TLC to look fancy but is a good player as is. The is the cheapest carbon necked Steinberger on the planet, unquestionably.
