Rare 1992 early custom shop Fender Telecaster Custom

Very rare 1992 Fender Custom Shop limited edition Telecaster Custom in absolutely gorgeous double bound sunburst.

This is based on a 1962 Fender Telecaster Custom. Back in ’62 a Telecaster custom meant that it was like a standard Tele but with a double bound body and not to be confused with the 1970s custom teles which came with humbuckers.

This was made in the very early years of the Fender Custom Shop when they actually produced one off custom special order guitars rather than the much bigger commercial production which takes place today. Guitars back then were made in small numbers either ordered by individual musicians or in very limited numbers for a small number of individual stores. This beauty is number 6 of a batch of 12 made specifically for legendary New York guitar shop, Sam Ash in 1992 and Fender says it was part of a limited edition.

This is a simply sensational guitar and one of the finest playing and sounding teles I’ve ever come across. As you can see it’s also one of the best looking teles you are ever likely to find, finished in stunning sunburst and a double bound body. It also features a stunning flamed neck with a beautiful very dark rosewood fretboard which I strongly suspect is Brazilian rosewood. Given it’s based on a 1962 model the fretboard is ‘slab board’ rather than ‘veneer’ and it is just wonderful to play.

This is a very rare piece given that Fender just didn’t, and still don’t, make many double bound telecasters and given it’s form a time when custom shop models were made in such small numbers. Also there was no such thing as ‘relics’ when this was made and it is very unusual to come across a non reliced Fender Custom shop guitar. Personally I’m not a fan of relics as it just seems ridiculous to beat up a brand new guitar.

This guitar is in fantastic condition given it is 34 years old and has probably lived most of its life in a case which is shame for such a nice playing and sounding guitar.

Given it’s from the early days for the Custom Shop guitars from this era came from a variety of cases and generally not a specific custom shop case. This comes with an original early 1990s Fender case. It also didn’t come with a cert when I got it and I don’t know if it ever had one given how old it is. However, I was in touch with Fender and they were happy to re-issue a Fender Custom Shop cert for the guitar.

Genuinely not sure about selling this but I have an old tele which I’ve had for years so this is getting played as much as it deserves. It’s for sale for now anyway.
