Plasma lamp/plasma ball

A plasma lamp (also known as a plasma globe) consists of a glass sphere filled with a mixture of noble gases. Inside, electrical discharges occur, creating spectacular, colorful ribbons of light that resemble lightning bolts.
At the very center of the sphere is an electrode supplied with high-voltage, low-current electricity (which makes the device safe to use).
The high voltage strips electrons from the gas atoms inside the sphere, creating plasma—an ionized, electrically conductive gas. The ribbons of light are the paths along which the electric current flows.
• When you bring your finger close to the glass surface, you alter the electric field around the sphere. Because the human body conducts electricity better than the surrounding air, the discharges are "drawn" toward the point of contact, forming a single, thicker, and brighter ribbon of light.
