Description:
The Vineyard Culture Landscape of the Island of Pico has been classified by UNESCO since 2004, comprising an area of ??987 hectares on the island of Pico, in the Azores archipelago, deeply marked by the action of man since the 15th century.
In this area, classified as a world heritage site, the vines are cultivated in the soil which was hard torn from the lava mantle, in rectangular plots of land popularly known as "currais" or "curraletas" and delimited by walls of volcanic stone that serve as protection against the elements coming from the sea water and the sea wind, forming a peculiar labyrinthine pattern, only allowing the sun necessary for the grapes to ripen to enter.
This symbiosis between man and the wild nature of the region, which results in wine production and a landscape of singular beauty, It is done with deep respect for the diversity of the fauna and flora present there, which include endemic species of the Laurissilva forests, some very rare and protected by law. The coin, by the sculptor Paula Lourenço, presents, on the obverse, a vine emerging from the volcanic stones, the shield of the Republic and the face value. On the reverse side, in relief, there is a representation of the volcanic cone of Pico partially covered by clouds and, at its base, an interpretation of the so-called "curraletas".
With the minting of this coin, Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda continues the series dedicated to the world heritage classified by UNESCO in Portugal.
