Description:
When you think of Willemstad on Cura�ao, you immediately see the colorful buildings on the famous Sint Annabaai. Willemstad is indeed known for its colorful, 'Dutch' architecture, but when you get to know the city better, you will also discover the Spanish and Portuguese influences. This mix of influences and cultures has ensured that several neighborhoods in the city were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. This is why the Royal Dutch Mint, commissioned by the Ministry of Finance, mints a commemorative coin: the Willemstad Fiver. Willemstad UNESCO World Heritage Willemstad is the capital of Cura�ao, but also the former capital of the Netherlands Antilles. The Spaniards already knew the island before 1500, but officially settled there in 1527. In 1634, a trading post on Sint Annabaai was conquered by the West India Company (WIC). Willemstad was in Dutch hands for years, but also under English management for a few years. Since 2010, Cura�ao has been an independent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Since 1997, the historic districts of Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Willemstad belongs to a small group of World Heritage Cities that are regarded as monuments because of their universal cultural-historical value. The unique location of the neighborhoods around the water emphasizes why Willemstad distinguishes itself as a port city. In addition, Willemstad still profiles itself as a historically recognizable city. The Willemstad Fiver is already the tenth commemorative coin to be issued in the UNESCO World Heritage series. Since 2012, many special topics have passed in review. Design The Willemstad Fiver was designed by Cleo Maxime de Brabander. The obverse shows King Willem-Alexander. The Queen Juliana Bridge in Willemstad is depicted in the background. The four stars at the top of the obverse symbolize the four countries that form the Dutch Kingdom: Cura�ao, Aruba. Sint Maarten and the Netherlands. The reverse side contains a cityscape with all four neighborhoods that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage: Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai. There are several important monuments to discover on the coin: the Handelskade, the Mikv� Israel-Emanuel synagogue and Fort Amsterdam in Punda and the Emanu-el temple; which marks the beginning of the Pietermaai district.
