Description:
Thanks to the adhesive discs at the end of its fingers and toes, it is able to climb on shrubs and trees. The tree frog is the only European amphibian to have this feature.
It is also distinguished by its small size, its shimmering green colour and the dark band around its eyes, extending to the lower flanks.
The tree frog is found in shallow calm waters, without fish, bright and sunny with dense vegetation.
Its terrestrial environment is woodland edges, scrub and wet, insect-rich grasslands.
Once present throughout Luxembourg, its habitat has been greatly reduced by intensive agriculture and urbanisation.
Despite a reintroduction project, the species remains on the red list of endangered species.
In 1870 the Luxembourg-ish zoologist Al-phonse de la Fontaine reported that the tree frog was used as "meteorologist".
It was placed in a glass jar with a ladder and a weather was forecast according to the height it climbed (hence their Luxembourg-ish by-names: "Wiederfrasch" or "Barometer").
About Euro Collector Coins:
Euro 'Collection Coins' are coins issued by Individual Member States.
These coins can not have a face value of 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, €1, or €2.
They are legal tender within the issuing state.
The European Council concludes that other member states should also accept these coins (via their respective National Central Banks [transaction fee may apply]) thus effectively making them legal tender through the euro zone.
