James 11 Maundy Groat

James 11 Maundy Groat James 11 Maundy Groat Coins

This is an England / Great Britain Maundy Fourpence (Groat) struck under King James II (reigned 1685–1688).
The obverse features the laureate portrait of King James II facing left with the legend IACOBVS · II · DEI · GRATIA.

The reverse displays a large Roman numeral IIII beneath a royal crown, framed by the legend MAG · BR · FRA · ET · HIB · REX.

Although heavy wear has partially effaced the top rim, traces of digits flank the crown (the type was minted only between 1686 and 1688).

The reverse fields show smoothing and rub, and the planchet displays rim irregularities and wavy buckling typical of small early milled silver pieces that saw significant pocket wear.

Collector Note: Despite the heavy wear, James II coinage carries inherent demand due to his brief three-year reign before the Glorious Revolution of 1688. In higher grades (VF/EF), these easily reach €100–€180+, but this heavily worn example trades as an entry-level historical piece.
