Irish 1723 Woods halfpenny
Irish halfpenny dated 1723 in very collectible condition.
These coins were produced under a license from the British crown in 1722 by William Woods - a mine owner and entrepreneur who saw himself making a large profit out of minting coins from material from his own mines.
The coins were regarded as inferior quality and vehemently opposed by the Irish people. A campaign by writer Jonathan Swift resulted in the license being withdrawn in 1724
A short lived piece of Irish numismatic history
