Irish 1723 Wood's Halfpenny.

Irish 1723 Wood's Halfpenny. Irish 1723 Wood's Halfpenny. Coins

Another really unique piece of Irish History. The Queen had a patent from King George to mint a big lot of Halfpennies for Ireland. For £10,000 she sold that Patent to an Ironmonger, William Woods. He set about getting them minted. It caused a massive political scandal in Ireland—most famously protested by Jonathan Swift in his Drapier's Letters—because the coins were thought to be underweight and forced upon the Irish population. Because they were rejected in Ireland, many were actually shipped over to the American colonies, which is why these are highly sought after by both Irish and American Colonial coin collectors.
