The Countermark (Costa Rica, 1889)
The circular stamp on the Liberty's cheek is known as the Costa Rica Type VI Countermark.
History: In 1889, Costa Rica faced a severe shortage of local currency. To fix this, the government authorized the "Habilitación" (validation) of foreign silver coins.
Purpose: The stamp features the Costa Rican coat of arms and allowed this Colombian coin to circulate legally as 50 Centavos in Costa Rica
