Brazil counter stamp coin 1828

Brazil counter stamp coin 1828 Brazil counter stamp coin 1828 Coins

This coin has a very interesting history.
When this host coin was minted in 1828, its original face value was 80 Réis (equal to 4 Vinténs).

During the 1820s and 1830s, widespread counterfeiting and hyperinflation devalued copper coinage in Brazil. To stabilize the economy, the imperial government passed a law on October 6, 1835, ordering copper coins across the empire to be collected and re-stamped with official circular countermarks.

Original Nominal Value (1828): 80 Réis

Countermarked Value (1835 onward): 40 Réis (halving its official legal tender value)
