Description:
In honor of James Ensor (1860 – 1949), who died 75 years ago, 2024 has been declared the James Ensor Year! To celebrate the Belgian grand master, avant-garde artist, colorist, realist, symbolist, an 'artist's artist', innovator, inspirator, researcher of light; a modern artist with an international reputation, a real festival will start in December 2023 in his hometown of Ostend. Various exhibitions in Mu.ZEE and activities dedicated to Ensor, his creations and inspiration, Ostend will pass the baton to Brussels. There is also plenty to do in Brussels in terms of exhibitions in the KBR and Bozar. Or participate in the National Expo and make your own Ensor-inspired work. In the fall, it is Antwerp's turn. With exhibitions at the KMSKA with the largest Ensor collection in the world, but also four other Antwerp museums and a variety of activities.
As a versatile and idiosyncratic artist, James Ensor has a very broad oeuvre. From drawings and etchings, still lifes or landscapes, to life-size works with masquerades, skeletons and caricatures. And everything in between. Inspiration for many artists after him.
A special artist deserves a special extra!
The James Ensor Year was the reason for the Royal Mint of Belgium to issue a 2½ euro coin with two of his most famous works on it. The 2½ euro is minted in BU quality and appears in a coin card with two language versions. In honor of this special occasion, a free NFT* has now been added to the coin card for the first time at a Belgian coin! Take a quick look to see which work by Ensor comes to life for you and enjoy both the coin and the exclusive digital extra!
The obverse of the coin shows the two central figures from the impressive 'The Intrigue' in the background. Above that, on the left in relief, the famous 'Self-portrait with Flower Hat' at the bottom of Ensor's signature and the reference to the James Ensor Year.
The extra, the NFT*, has been added to the coincard with this coin. View the step-by-step plan in the special folder or online and claim your NFT.
There are five different NFTs in as many degrees of rarity. Ensor's works come to life with a 'glitch' or shiver!
* NFT: stands for Non-Fungible Token. An NFT is a digital certificate of ownership, stored on a blockchain, which refers to a digital media object. QR codes have been added to 2 x 5,000 coincards 2 ½ euro James Ensor Year 2024 with which an NFT can be claimed. This means that there is an exclusive extra with the coins!
You will receive the coincard in a special folder with step-by-step instructions. You can also find more information and explanations at www.herdenkingsmunten.be/nft
