He ruled as Emperor of Austria for nearly 68 years (1848–1916), making him one of the longest-serving monarchs in world history. For generations of his subjects, he was the only ruler they had ever known, serving as a unifying symbol for a vast and multi-ethnic empire.
Following the 1914 assassination of his nephew and heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Franz Joseph signed the fateful ultimatum to Serbia that ignited the alliance system and launched World War I. He died mid-way through the conflict in 1916; just two years later, the war ended and his multi-century empire collapsed
