Description:
A rare opportunity to acquire a "First Year" 1928 Irish Free State duo in exceptional technical condition. These specimens have been carefully preserved and represent investment-grade pieces for the upcoming 2028 Centenary.
1928 Silver Shilling (The Bull):
* Technical Grade: AU (About Uncirculated) detail.
* Key Features: Full facial detail including a clear, deep nasal hole and sharp, pointed horns.
* The "Tuft": Features the rare, perceptible tail tuft—a detail usually lost on 95% of circulated examples.
* Designer Mark: Sharp "PM" (Percy Metcalfe) initials are clearly visible above the word "Shilling."
* Purity: 75% Silver with original, uncleaned patina and sharp harp strings.
1928 Farthing (The Woodcock):
* Technical Grade: EF (Extremely Fine) detail.
* Key Features: Exceptional "High-Point" survival. The bird’s eye is a distinct bead, the beak is full and sharp, and individual wing feathers are clearly defined.
* Designer Mark: Crisp "PM" initials near the tail, confirming the high grade.
* Lustre: Retains original orange mint lustre in the recessed areas.
* Condition Note: Displays some very light surface hairlines consistent with 98 years of careful storage, but technical detail remains museum-quality.
Historical Provenance:
"Issued under the Coinage Act of 1926 and released on 12 December 1928, this set represents the birth of independent Irish currency. Designed by Percy Metcalfe under a committee chaired by W.B. Yeats, the 1928 series is documented in the National Museum and Central Bank of Ireland as the 'Barnyard Collection'. The Shilling's high silver content (75%) was a deliberate symbol of the new State’s stability."
"The crispness of the strike on the bull's horns and the bird's beak suggests these were from the very first batches struck at the Royal Mint in London in late 1928."
Summary:
These are not "standard" circulated coins. The presence of the tail tuft, full feathering, and sharp designer marks makes this set a perfect cornerstone for a 2028 Centenary collection.
