1864 "L" ONE CENT variety Nice grade GXF/AU
Rare āLā variety in GXF/AU grade
Although The Mint Director at the time, James Pollock requested that there be no change in design at that time, Mint Engraver, James Longacre did a slight redesign of the obverse Indian head anyway. This sharper design included his initial - a tiny letter "L" on the ribbon below the base of the last feather.
A separate, third type of 1864 Indian Head Penny exists, and it is a bronze type 1864 with an āLā inscribed behind the hair on the Indian's neck. 1864 L's are the rarest and, as such, carry the heftiest price tag.
