1813 Irish Token J Hilles Dublin
A lovely Dublin token, struck to counter the shortage of small change during British rule. Unusually payable in Bank of Ireland notes. Most tokens were only redeemable in strikers own shops or taverns. A remarkable piece of Irish history looks up James Hilles foundry at Lexlip and his shop in Abbey Street and his shovel making plant at Finglas, lots of research can be done on Tokens, probably more interesting than coins!
