Japy Freres French Black Marble Mantel Clock
A 19th-century French drumhead mantel clock in a black slate and marble case, equipped with a traditional, circular pendule de Paris movement.
The brass plate of the movement, on the left, features a circular seal (medallion) from the renowned Japy Frères manufacture. Below, the number 110 is stamped, which, combined with the pendulum length, defined the clock's technical parameters.
Round seal (bottom): This is the official trademark (signature) of the Japy Frères manufacture. It features the distinctive motif of a medal won at industrial exhibitions in Paris (often described as the Medaille d'Or or Medaille d'Honneur). The presence of this circular seal confirms the movement's authentic French origin.
The clock has a steel spring suspension (visible above the bell), indicating production in the second half of the 19th century (most likely 1870–1890).
It strikes the hour and half-hour with a very pleasant, quiet chime.
The clock is complete and fully functional.
