Paulistano Armchair by Paulo Mendes da Rocha
Authentic Objekto Paulistano armchair, designed by celebrated Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha in 1957.
A modern design classic, the Paulistano is formed from a continuous bent-steel frame supporting a single full-grain leather sling. Its minimal, sculptural construction gives the chair a distinctive lightness and makes it exceptionally comfortable.
This example has a black steel frame and warm cognac/red-brown leather. It is in very good used condition:
• The leather remains thick, supple and structurally excellent
• No tears, cracking or splitting
• Stitching and edges are intact
• Light tonal variation and an attractive natural patina
• The steel frame has only minimal signs of use
The leather is full-grain and uncorrected, so its subtle variations and markings are part of the natural character of the hide rather than damage.
The original Objekto manufacturer’s label is present. New leather Paulistano chairs currently retail from approximately €1,920, with some European retailers charging over €2,300.
Approximate dimensions:
70cm wide × 70cm deep × 82cm high
Seat height: approximately 38cm
The Paulistano is regarded as one of the significant Brazilian furniture designs of the 20th century and is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
A beautiful and understated chair that works equally well as a comfortable armchair or as a sculptural piece of furniture.
